On Saturday, Dec 1, the Knightstown Panther wrestlers participated in an eight-team tournament at New Castle High School. Fighting through injuries and with many wrestlers moving up weight classes to fill spots, the Panthers ended the day with a 1-4 record, bringing their season record to 3-4.
The highlight of the day came with a 42-27 win against the Beech Grove Hornets. 113lb senior David Peck and 138lb junior Nick Walsh both picked up wins by decision, while junior 132lb Justin Lane won by forfeit. 120lb junior Kalen Carter, 152lb junior Landon Carmichael, 170lb sophomore Mason Muncy, 182lb sophomore Liam Orcutt and 195lb junior Aiden Orcutt all picked up pins in the competition.
For individual performances, Walsh was the sole undefeated wrestler with five wins on the day. 285lb sophomore Sam Thomas and A. Orcutt picked up four wins each, with Thomas picking up three pins. There were two wins apiece for Lane, Carter, and 126lb sophomore Logan Jordan, while Peck, 138lb junior Nick Lawson, Muncy, 170lb sophomore Ben Newby, and Carmichael all finished the day with single victories.
Head Wrestling Coach Robbie Hadley said after the meet that he saw room for improvement following his team’s performance.
“I think that this is an opportunity for us to learn and get better,” Hadley said. “We faced some quality opponents, but this is still not the outcome we were hoping for. We are going to double down on our efforts to make sure we learn from this experience.”
The Panthers will return to the mats at home Saturday, Dec 8, for the Panther Wrestling Invitational and County Tournament at the Knightstown High School Gymnasium. Action will get underway at 9 a.m.
